Rudesheim will be the place to be on July 5, as the great Rhine city will stage its annual 'Rhine in Flames' fireworks event, which is one of the summer highlights of all Germany's great festivals.
Already a major tourist attraction for more than 37 years, the big pyrotechnic event between Trechtingshausen and Bingen/Rüdesheim attracts visitors from all over the world, with numerous firework displays, “burning castles” and a striking fleet of illuminated riverboats.
Even better, for those on a cruise through the area, there is the chance to experience this amazing spectacle on a special riverboat, which cast off at Rüdesheim. Tickets are already available from 62-109 Euro but must be booked in advance.
Most boats leave Rüdesheim between 6-8pm and return around midnight. The journey leads past numerous historic sites into the fabled Upper Middle Rhine Valley (a UNESCO World Heritage since 2002), where the forts, castles and romantic ruins line both sides of the river between Rüdesheim/Bingen and Koblenz like a strong of gigantic pearls.
Around 50 boats join the flotilla that glides majestically below one of Germany's most elaborate firework displays and the surrounding valley erupts in a final climactic display of pyrotechnic art as the culmination of the "Rhine in Flames" is fired from a platform in the middle Rhine between Rüdesheim and Bingen. A supporting programme takes place from Friday to Sunday in town.
