Seven Wonders of the River Cruise Part 1 - The Magdeburg Water Bridge

River cruising in Europe is in itself a great wonder in its own right, right?

However, we are pulling together our 'seven wonders of the European River Cruise' featuring things you may come across that really are special! And we start with the Water Bridge in Magdeburg, Germany.

This extraordinary bridge opened in 2003 having been built over a five year period and at a cost of around €500 million. 24,000 tons of steel don't come very cheaply these days! The bridge does exactly what it says on the tin, or steel rather. A bridge of water over more water to form the world's largest water bridge.

Geographically, this incredible water bridge now connects Hannover and Berlin with the actual water crossing between the Midland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal, shortening travel times significantly when using the route.

Viking is offering a river cruise that will cruise the bridge if you are keen to get a closer look at our first wonder of the River Cruising world! Departing between March and November 2012, this eight-day cruise from Magdeburg, Germany to Melnik, Czech Republic will offer the chance to see the bridge in action.

Next wonder, the funicular lift of strepy-thieu! A video from Youtube shows more of the Bridge in action.
