As we head into a New Year, it is an exciting time for river-cruising, with more ships, more itineraries and more options than ever before.
Just a quick look ahead shows we will be in for a record-breaking year, with all the major lines adding new ships and/or places to visit, and more focus on river-cruising than ever before, including a whole new line.
Take Viking River Cruises for example - they will debut a record 14 ships at a unique naming ceremony in March, and that gives them an enormous amount of new capacity potential, with 2,660 extra berths each week on the rivers of Europe.
AmaWaterways will have two of their new breed of vessel - the AmaSonata and AmaReina - following in the wake of their highly successful 2013 duo, AmaPrima and AmaCerto, while their LImited Editions Tours will showcase shore excursions in a whole new way.
For Avalon Waterways, there will be three new additions in their Suite Ships fleet, giving the company a 15-ship fleet for the first time. while French specialists CroisiEurope are adding three new vessels to their barge fleet.
Emerald Waterways will be the first new line in more than six years when they make their debut in April, offering a more mainstream version of parent company Scenic Tours' deluxe style.
And, while the Rhine and Danube remain the most popular choices in terms of itineraties, there are increasing choices for visiting the more rural parts of France, the Douro in Portugal and the Po in Italy.
It all adds up to a bumper year in prospect and underlines the fact you need to be thinking about a river-cruise in 2014. You know it makes sense!
